Ilakaka, Madagascar: The Sapphire Rush of Africa

Ilakaka, a remote town in southwestern Madagascar, is home to one of the world's largest and most productive sapphire deposits. Discovered in 1998, the Ilakaka sapphire rush transformed this once-sleepy village into a bustling mining town, attracting prospectors from across Madagascar and beyond.

Why Ilakaka?

Rainbow of Sapphire Colors
Ilakaka is famous for producing sapphires in every color of the spectrum—blue, pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, and the rare padparadscha (pink-orange). This incredible diversity makes it a treasure trove for collectors and jewelers.

Exceptional Quality
Malagasy sapphires are renowned for their vivid color saturation, excellent clarity, and natural brilliance. Many stones require minimal or no heat treatment, preserving their natural beauty.

Artisanal Mining
Unlike industrial mining operations, Ilakaka's sapphires are extracted through artisanal methods—small-scale miners working by hand in alluvial deposits. This traditional approach supports local communities and minimizes environmental impact.

Our Ilakaka Experience

The Journey
Reaching Ilakaka requires a journey through Madagascar's rugged interior—hours of driving on unpaved roads through baobab forests and remote villages. The isolation adds to the adventure and authenticity of the experience.

The Mining Sites
At the mining sites, we witness the entire process—miners digging through layers of gravel and sediment, washing the material in wooden sluices, and carefully sorting through the concentrate to find sapphires.

The work is labor-intensive and requires patience. For every hundred kilograms of gravel, only a handful of sapphires may be found—and only a fraction of those will be gem-quality.

The Gem Market
Ilakaka's gem market is a vibrant, chaotic scene where miners and dealers gather to trade rough sapphires. Negotiations happen in Malagasy, French, and broken English, with gemological loupes and flashlights used to inspect stones under the harsh African sun.

We spend hours examining rough sapphires, looking for exceptional color, clarity, and potential. The best stones are carefully selected and set aside for cutting.

Gemstones from Ilakaka

Blue Sapphires
Ilakaka produces stunning blue sapphires ranging from light cornflower blue to deep royal blue. We seek out stones with vivid, even color and excellent transparency.

Padparadscha Sapphires
One of the rarest and most valuable sapphire varieties, padparadscha sapphires display a delicate blend of pink and orange. Ilakaka is one of the few sources for these coveted gems.

Fancy Sapphires
Pink, yellow, orange, green, and purple sapphires are abundant in Ilakaka. We love creating gradient eternity rings using Malagasy sapphires in multiple colors—each stone carefully selected to create a harmonious color transition.

Color-Change Sapphires
Some Ilakaka sapphires exhibit color-change properties, appearing blue in daylight and purple under incandescent light. These rare stones are highly prized by collectors.

Cutting & Certification

After selecting rough sapphires, we send them to master cutters in Thailand or Sri Lanka for precision faceting. The cutting process is crucial—a skilled cutter can maximize a stone's color and brilliance while minimizing waste.

Once cut, each sapphire is certified by GIA or other reputable gemological laboratories, documenting its color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.

The Sardinia Collection

Our Sardinia Collection features gradient eternity rings showcasing the incredible color diversity of Malagasy sapphires. Each ring displays a flawless gradient—from intense orange to warm yellow, or from deep blue to light aqua—with sapphires sourced exclusively from Ilakaka.

These pieces celebrate the natural beauty and variety of Madagascar's sapphire deposits, with each stone carefully selected and arranged to create a harmonious color flow.

Sustainability & Community Impact

We work directly with artisanal miners and local dealers, ensuring fair compensation and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Our purchases help fund education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements in Ilakaka and surrounding villages.

Artisanal mining, when done responsibly, has a lower environmental impact than industrial operations and provides income for thousands of Malagasy families.

Cultural Heritage

Madagascar's gemstone heritage extends beyond sapphires—the island is also known for tourmaline, beryl, and other rare minerals. The Malagasy people have a deep connection to the land and its treasures, viewing gemstones as gifts from the earth.

Visiting Ilakaka offers a glimpse into this unique culture, where traditional beliefs blend with modern commerce in a remote corner of Africa.
