Ratnapura, Sri Lanka: The City of Gems

Ratnapura, meaning "City of Gems" in Sinhalese, is Sri Lanka's legendary gemstone capital. Nestled in the lush hills of southwestern Sri Lanka, this ancient mining region has produced some of the world's finest sapphires for over 2,000 years.

Why Ratnapura?

World's Finest Blue Sapphires
Sri Lankan blue sapphires, particularly those from Ratnapura, are renowned for their exceptional clarity, vivid cornflower blue color, and natural brilliance. They are considered among the finest sapphires in the world.

Unheated Natural Beauty
Many Ratnapura sapphires require no heat treatment, preserving their natural color and clarity. Unheated Sri Lankan sapphires command premium prices and are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

Ancient Mining Tradition
Gemstone mining in Ratnapura dates back over two millennia. Traditional methods passed down through generations are still used today, creating a living connection to Sri Lanka's rich gemological heritage.

Our Ratnapura Experience

The Journey
Ratnapura is located about 100 kilometers southeast of Colombo, accessible by winding mountain roads through tea plantations and rubber estates. The region's tropical climate and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for alluvial gemstone deposits.

Traditional Mining Methods
At the mining sites, we observe traditional "pit mining"—miners dig vertical shafts up to 50 meters deep, extracting gem-bearing gravel (called "illam") from ancient riverbeds buried beneath layers of clay and rock.

The gravel is brought to the surface in woven baskets and washed in circular bamboo sieves. Miners carefully sort through the concentrate, looking for the telltale glint of sapphire, ruby, or other precious stones.

This labor-intensive process requires skill, patience, and generations of knowledge. Many mining families have worked the same claims for decades, passing down expertise from father to son.

The Gem Market
Ratnapura's gem market is a fascinating blend of tradition and commerce. Dealers sit cross-legged on mats, displaying rough and cut sapphires in small paper packets called "briefkes."

Negotiations are conducted in hushed tones, with gemological loupes and flashlights used to inspect stones. Trust and reputation are everything—many deals are sealed with a handshake and payment in cash.

We spend days examining hundreds of sapphires, looking for exceptional color, clarity, and cut quality. The best stones are carefully selected for our collections.

Gemstones from Ratnapura

Cornflower Blue Sapphires
The most prized sapphires from Ratnapura display a vivid cornflower blue color—neither too dark nor too light, with excellent saturation and transparency. These stones are the gold standard for blue sapphires worldwide.

Royal Blue Sapphires
Deeper, more saturated blue sapphires are also found in Ratnapura. These "royal blue" stones have a richer, more intense color and are perfect for statement engagement rings.

Pink Sapphires
Ratnapura produces stunning pink sapphires ranging from delicate pastel pink to vibrant hot pink. These stones are increasingly popular for engagement rings and fine jewelry.

Yellow Sapphires
Warm, sunny yellow sapphires from Ratnapura range from pale lemon to deep golden hues. These cheerful stones add a unique touch to custom jewelry designs.

Padparadscha Sapphires
The rarest and most valuable variety, padparadscha sapphires display a delicate blend of pink and orange reminiscent of a tropical sunset. Sri Lanka is one of the primary sources for these coveted gems.

The Cutting Process

After selecting rough sapphires in Ratnapura, we work with master cutters—many based in Sri Lanka or Thailand—to design the optimal cut for each stone. Sri Lankan cutters are renowned for their precision faceting, ensuring maximum brilliance and color return.

The cutting process can take days or weeks, depending on the stone's size and complexity. We stay involved throughout, approving the cutting plan and inspecting the final result before certification.

Certification & Traceability

All sapphires sourced from Ratnapura are sent to GIA or other reputable gemological laboratories for certification. We document the entire journey—from rough stone selection at the market to final certification—providing complete traceability for our clients.

For sapphires above 1 carat, we provide additional documentation including photographs of the rough stone and details about the mining location.

Cultural Heritage

Ratnapura's gemstone heritage is deeply woven into Sri Lankan culture. The city has been a center of gem trading since ancient times, mentioned in historical texts and visited by traders from across Asia and the Middle East.

Today, Ratnapura remains a vibrant gem center where tradition meets modern commerce. The city's gem museum showcases spectacular specimens, and local families continue mining traditions that have sustained them for generations.

Sustainability & Ethics

We work directly with artisanal miners and local dealers in Ratnapura, ensuring fair compensation and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Our purchases help fund education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements in mining communities.

Traditional pit mining, when done responsibly, has a lower environmental impact than industrial operations and provides income for thousands of Sri Lankan families.
