The Journey
Ratnapura is located about 100 kilometers southeast of Colombo, accessible by winding mountain roads through tea plantations and rubber estates. The region's tropical climate and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for alluvial gemstone deposits.
Traditional Mining Methods
At the mining sites, we observe traditional "pit mining"—miners dig vertical shafts up to 50 meters deep, extracting gem-bearing gravel (called "illam") from ancient riverbeds buried beneath layers of clay and rock.
The gravel is brought to the surface in woven baskets and washed in circular bamboo sieves. Miners carefully sort through the concentrate, looking for the telltale glint of sapphire, ruby, or other precious stones.
This labor-intensive process requires skill, patience, and generations of knowledge. Many mining families have worked the same claims for decades, passing down expertise from father to son.
The Gem Market
Ratnapura's gem market is a fascinating blend of tradition and commerce. Dealers sit cross-legged on mats, displaying rough and cut sapphires in small paper packets called "briefkes."
Negotiations are conducted in hushed tones, with gemological loupes and flashlights used to inspect stones. Trust and reputation are everything—many deals are sealed with a handshake and payment in cash.

The cutting process can take days or weeks, depending on the stone's size and complexity. We stay involved throughout, approving the cutting plan and inspecting the final result before certification.
Certification & Traceability
All sapphires sourced from Ratnapura are sent to GIA or other reputable gemological laboratories for certification. We document the entire journey—from rough stone selection at the market to final certification—providing complete traceability for our clients.
For sapphires above 1 carat, we provide additional documentation including photographs of the rough stone and details about the mining location.
