In March 2017, a pastor and artisanal miner named Emmanuel Momoh discovered a 709-carat rough diamond in the Kono district of Sierra Leone. It was the 14th largest diamond ever found—a discovery that could have made him wealthy beyond imagination.
But Pastor Momoh made a different choice.
A Decision That Changed Everything
Instead of selling the diamond through unofficial channels (where he might have received immediate payment but far below its true value), Pastor Momoh turned the diamond over to the Sierra Leone government. He wanted the sale to be transparent, legal, and beneficial to his entire community.
He named it the "Peace Diamond"—a symbol of hope for a country still recovering from a devastating civil war that had been partly funded by conflict diamonds.
The Auction
In December 2017, the Peace Diamond was auctioned by Rapaport Group for $6.5 million. The proceeds were split between:
- Pastor Momoh and his artisanal mining team
- The Sierra Leone government
- Community development projects in Kono district
This transparent sale ensured that the diamond's value benefited not just one person, but an entire community.
