Why We Love Australian Opals
Australian opals are among the most breathtaking gemstones in the world, known for their captivating play-of-color and unique formation. Unlike any other opal variety, Australian opals display a mesmerizing spectrum of shifting colors, making each stone a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The National Gemstone of Australia
Australia produces 95% of the world's precious opals and is home to the most valuable opal varieties. Australian opals are prized for their exceptional play-of-color—flashes of spectral colors that shift and change as the stone moves, creating a living, dynamic appearance unlike any other gemstone.
Why Choose Australian Opals?
Mesmerizing Play-of-Color
Australian opals display the most vibrant, dramatic play-of-color of any opal variety. Flashes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet dance across the stone's surface.
Unique Character
No two opals are alike. Each stone has a unique pattern and color combination, making every piece of opal jewelry truly one-of-a-kind.
Symbolic Meaning
Opals symbolize creativity, inspiration, hope, and emotional expression. They're associated with imagination and artistic vision.
October Birthstone
Opals are the traditional birthstone for October, representing hope and purity.
Types of Australian Opals
Black Opal
The most valuable opal variety. Features play-of-color on a dark body (black, dark gray, or dark blue). Primarily from Lightning Ridge, NSW. The dark background makes colors appear more vibrant and dramatic.
White Opal (Light Opal)
Features play-of-color on a white, cream, or light gray body. From Coober Pedy and Mintabie, SA. More common than black opal but still beautiful.
Boulder Opal
Opal formed within ironstone matrix. The natural brown ironstone backing creates contrast for the play-of-color. From Queensland. Each piece is unique with natural patterns.
Crystal Opal
Transparent to semi-transparent opal with play-of-color. Can have any body color. Offers a different aesthetic with see-through quality.
Australian Opal Quality Factors
Play-of-Color
The most important factor. Look for vibrant, varied colors covering much of the stone. Red is the rarest and most valuable color. Patterns should be attractive and well-distributed.
Body Tone
Black opals (darker body) are most valuable, followed by boulder, crystal, and white opals.
Brightness
The intensity of the play-of-color. Brighter, more vivid colors are more valuable.
Pattern
Distinctive patterns (harlequin, ribbon, Chinese writing) can increase value. Pattern preference is subjective.

Australian Opal Care - Important
Opals require special care:
- Avoid water exposure: Prolonged water exposure can cause crazing (cracking). Remove before swimming or bathing
- No ultrasonic cleaners: Can damage opals
- Gentle cleaning only: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth
- Avoid extreme temperatures: Sudden temperature changes can cause cracking
- Careful storage: Store in a padded box, occasionally with a damp cotton ball to prevent drying
- Protective settings: Bezel settings offer better protection than prong settings
Opals are relatively soft (5.5-6.5 on Mohs scale) and best suited for pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear rings.
