Why We Love Tahitian Pearls
Tahitian pearls captivate with their unique, rich colors that are found only in French Polynesia's warm waters. Their rarity and natural beauty make them more than precious.
The Black Pearl
Tahitian pearls, often called "black pearls," are among the most exotic and sought-after pearls in the world. Despite their name, they display a remarkable range of colors—from silver and charcoal to peacock green, aubergine, and deep black. No two Tahitian pearls are exactly alike, making each piece truly unique.
Why Choose Tahitian Pearls?
Exotic Colors
Tahitian pearls are the only naturally dark pearls. Their colors range from silver-gray to charcoal to black, often with overtones of peacock green, purple, blue, or rose. These colors occur naturally—no treatment required.
Exceptional Size
Tahitian pearls are among the largest cultured pearls, typically ranging from 8-14mm, with some reaching 18mm or more. Their substantial size creates dramatic impact.
Symbolic Meaning
Tahitian pearls symbolize wisdom, protection, and exotic beauty. They represent sophistication and refined taste.
Rarity & Value
Tahitian pearls are rare and valuable. They can only be cultivated in French Polynesia's lagoons, making them exclusive and highly prized.
Tahitian Pearl Colors
Tahitian pearls display a spectrum of natural colors:
- Peacock - Dark green-gray with pink/purple overtones (most prized)
- Black - Deep, true black (rare and valuable)
- Aubergine - Dark purple-gray
- Silver/Gray - Light to medium gray
- Charcoal - Dark gray to black
- Cherry - Dark with reddish overtones
The most valuable Tahitian pearls display peacock coloring—a dark body with green and pink overtones.
Tahitian Pearl Quality Factors
Luster
The most important factor. Look for sharp, mirror-like reflections on the pearl's surface. High luster indicates thick nacre and quality.
Surface Quality
Fewer blemishes (spots, bumps, wrinkles) increase value. Perfectly clean surfaces are rare and command premium prices.
Color
Peacock coloring is most prized, followed by pure black. Color should be even and attractive.
Shape
Round and near-round pearls are most valuable. Baroque (irregular) shapes can be beautiful and unique.
Size
Larger pearls (12mm+) with good quality are rare and valuable.
Tahitian Pearl Origins
Tahitian pearls are cultivated exclusively in French Polynesia:
- Tahiti - The namesake island
- Gambier Islands - Major production area
- Tuamotu Archipelago - Produces finest quality pearls
They're cultivated in the black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera), which gives them their distinctive dark colors. The cultivation process takes 18-24 months minimum.
Tahitian Pearl Care
Pearls require gentle care:
- Wear often: Body oils help maintain luster
- Put on last: After applying makeup, perfume, and hairspray
- Wipe after wearing: Use a soft, damp cloth to remove oils and acids
- No ultrasonic cleaners: Can damage pearls
- Gentle cleaning only: Mild soap and water, soft cloth
- Avoid chemicals: Perfume, hairspray, chlorine can damage nacre
- Proper storage: Store separately in soft pouch, not airtight containers
- Restring regularly: Pearl necklaces should be restrung every 1-2 years
Pearls are organic gems (6-6.5 on Mohs scale) and require more care than mineral gemstones.
